THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN SHOOTING DIGITALLY
Digital photography puts the power of photography in all of our hands. With digital photography, you can literally point, shoot and download the image to your computer. This latest digital revolution is forcing the design and print industries to change and adapt, spurred by new technology. With this greater power comes greater responsibility for all of us.
What you need to learn
Digital cameras are complex, and they require a fair amount of knowledge on the user’s part. You need to know how to take good pictures with color, content and composition, how to use the camera, file size, and how to download images. Without knowing all these, your results will never be as good as buying professional stock photography or hiring a professional photographer. In addition, you will either need to know how to edit and retouch digital images, or have us do it for you.
What a difference it makes
Furthermore, digital point-and-shoot cameras, which often take great snapshots, do not necessarily work well for professional designs. Inexpensive digital cameras often have one fixed lens and hesitate after you push the shutter button. They also use simple autofocus mechanisms, and the image sensor is smaller (than in professional camera's) and does not always produce sharp images - a must for a professional look.
Professional photographers use high-end digital cameras that cost thousands of dollars, and they invest many more thousands in lenses and lights, as well as many hours perfecting their craft. Professional photographers who shoot with digital cameras usually retouch their images and prepare them for printing as part of their services. This is why professional digital photography often costs as much as film-based photography. If you want professional results, you must be willing to do what they do.
What we can do to ensure good results
If you plan on using digital photography, talk to us. We will work with you to come up with the best plan. Also, plan on doing several design proofs, which might extend your turnaround time. Shooting digital is fun. However, it does not decrease the need for technical skills required and sharp and hi-res files needed to create professional images.

Promote Powerfully with Pictures
A picture may be worth a thousand words but, the right picture, used in the right way, can be worth a hundred times that to your product, service or mission! In fact, it’s proven that using professional photography in your marketing or public relations increases your response rate, or ROI.
In this information age people use pictures to make informed decisions. Take a newspaper for example, when you read an article it usually now has a picture of the writer. This is because you and I want to see who is talking to us. The same goes whether you have a family-owned business or a nonprofit, people want to know and SEE the story - what you are about.
We all have information bombarding us from every direction. And well crafted pictures pull us in, focus us on a moment in time if you will, to see for ourselves and to make an educated decision ... if it’s meaningful to us ... or not.
A bad or just mundane picture of your product or mission-in-action can have a detrimental effect on impact & response. It can be interpreted as meaning that the proprietor / director just doesn't care much to make the product look "less good". In the case of food & people especially, it can have a strong negative impact. Even a professional shot with the wrong props, background, color scheme or pose can make you think that the last thing you want to eat is that grey-looking steak they want to sell you, or that group of Bishop’s wearing Miters and you can’t see all the faces.
A good shot is more than sharp focus and good color. A lot of point-and-shoot cameras can do that for you. Marketing these days is all about connecting emotionally with the target audience. Composition, propping, post-processing, lighting, what NOT to include, etc.. All of these things, when done well, create an emotional response that sells the product or service. It can overcome bad copy or even a so-so product. But great copy or even a great product will have a hard time overcoming a bad or blah picture ... not to mention an eye appealing picture album.
This is why it is important to hire a professional photographer instead of a do-it-yourself approach. Professional pictures will prove to be a wise investment. Finding the right photographer then who understands your business or institution, and has the skills that can meet your needs, is the key to Promote Powerfully!
